Chad M. Smith

Chad Smith is a former Examining Attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and he has more than 22 years of experience working with large and boutique law firms. He has extensive experience in managing large U.S. and international trademark portfolios, and matters involving the protection, registration and enforcement of copyrights. He has successfully represented clients in domain name disputes and other adverse proceedings involving trademarks and copyrights and has represented numerous clients in matters before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (oppositions, cancellations, ex parte appeals).

Chad assists clients with all stages of securing trademark protection with an emphasis on the selection and enforcement of trademarks domestically and internationally. In addition, he works closely with clients in formulating worldwide trademark protection and registration strategies. Chad has been instrumental in developing intellectual property strategies for numerous start-up and entrepreneurial clients, several of whom have grown to million-dollar, international competitors. Chad’s highly-personal, one-on-one approach to client relationships has led him to consistently meet and exceed his clients’ goals.

In addition to his work at Ironmark Law Group, Chad is an adjunct professor at Seattle University School of Law and University of Washington School of Law where he teaches courses on trademark prosecution and practice. He also volunteers and has served on the board for Washington Lawyers for the Arts.

Lucas S. Michels

Lucas brings a varied legal and business background to Ironmark. He advises entrepreneurs, businesses, and artists on intellectual property, corporate, and commercial law, as well as various regulatory compliance matters. Before becoming a lawyer, Lucas worked in foreign regulatory compliance and international lobbying in Brussels and Seattle. Drawing from these experiences, Lucas understands the day-to-day domestic and cross-border legal and regulatory obstacles businesses face, and provides tailored legal services to meet and overcome these challenges.
 
Particularly, Lucas assists clients with copyright and trademark prosecution and portfolio management, IP and commercial transaction negotiation and drafting, and corporate formation and governance-related services. He also represents clients in IP, corporate, and commercial litigation and arbitration before state, federal, and administrative tribunals, including the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy arbitration panels. Lucas also continues to work with clients on a variety of regulatory compliance matters, ranging from privacy, to food and agricultural product processing, and export compliance.
 
Lucas also has extensive experience, including authoring and presenting, on the topic of online intellectual property and personality rights enforcement. He has managed online enforcement campaigns for multiple brands, photographers, and victims of revenge pornography, as well as acting as copyright agent for multiple online service providers.
